TAEKWONDO NO BRASIL

SANG MIN
CHO

Grand Master Sang Min Cho is known in most of the media and books as the "Father of
BrazilianTKD". On July of 1970, he was sent to Brazil, by the ITF and Gen. Choi Hong Hi.
He was 7th DAN at the time and opened a TKD School called "Academia Liberdade" in
Sao Paulo. During the 70s, just a few years after Grand Master  Cho arrival in Sao Paulo
there was a massive immigration of Korean masters to that giant city. By early 80s, there was
around 50 Korean Masters teaching in that state. GM Cho introduced TKD to the Brazilian
Police, and for many years worked hard to develop and promote the art. Today he is retired
from teaching and lives in Los Angeles, California. It's interesting to mention that almost four
decades later his first TKD School (Academia Liberdade) in Sao Paulo still open and is
owned by Grand Master Cho's brother-in-law. It's the oldest TKD School in South America.

JUNG DO LIM

Master Jung Do Lim is reported by some to be  the first Korean to teach TKD in Brazil in the
late 60s,even though in the most media the name mentioned is Sang Min Cho (came in 1970).
Master Jung Do Lim arrived as 5th DAN in the state of Bahia (north of Brazil) in 1968, he was
a member of the KTA and Moo Duk Kwan and started to teach TKD in that same year at the
University of "Cruz das Almas", and later in the city of Salvador (capital of Bahia).possibly
because he settled in an isolated region of Brazil and was not as active in the media as well in
TKD politics, he ended up been excluded of most books as the father of Brazilian TKD.
Master Lim formed several black belts in that region and was reportedly teaching until the 90s.

YEO JUN KIM

Master Yeo Jun Kim current Vice President of the Brazilian Taekwondo Confederation
has been committed and very active in Brazilian TKD for the past three decades. He was
a successful competitor in the 80s and in partnership with his brother Yeo Jin Kim owns
the famous "Academia Liberdade" in Sao Paulo, the oldest TKD School in Brazil, opened
by his brother-in-law, Grand Master Sang Min Cho in 1970. Master Kim is deeply
involved in TKD politics, in 1994 he founded the "Uniao Brazilera de TKD" or UBT
which was a national TKD organization parallel to the CBTKD (main national federation).
Master Kim is now a 7th DAN and the current president of FETESP (Sao Paulo TKD -
Federation). He returned to the CBTKD and is considered to be the future successor of
Master Yon Min Kim to control TKD in Brazil

WOO JAE LEE

Master Woo Jae Lee arrived in Brazil as a 6th DAN on March of 1972, sent by the ITF and
General Choi Hong Hi and opened the first TKD School in Rio de Janeiro. Master Lee was
the biggest promoter of TKD in Brazil during the 70s. On January of 1973, he organized the
first TKD competition ever in Brazil (in Rio) and short after arranged a team of 10 masters
from Korea to come to Brazil and travel all over the country doing public demonstrations
in schools, TV, military bases, and police headquarters. At the end, each one of those masters
members of the demo team chose a state to settle and open a TKD school. Master Lee also
was the publisher of a martial arts magazine called "DO" and a famous book named "Aprenda
Taekwondo" (Learning Taekwondo). In 1974 he became the first President of the first national
TKD organization (Departamento Tecnico de TKD). Master Lee retired from TKD in the 80s
and still lives in Brazil.

YONG MIN KIM

Master Yong Min Kim arrived in Rio de Janeiro in 1974, to become rich and famous. It all
started because of his spectacular demonstrations. He had a stunning technique, incredible
speed, especially on the spinning hook kick, and a lot of charisma with people. In the early
90s, he had a weekly participation in a national TV show for children and later a comic
book was named after him: "Master Kim". He became a star outside the Martial Arts world.
In the 80s, he got involved in TKD politics and was left by Master Woo Jae Lee to control
the National TKD Organization, since them has been more than 20 years. TKD politics are
a hot topic these days because he is still in power and controlling the "Confederacao
Brazileira de TKD" (CBTKD). Master Kim is now 9th DAN

JOO YUL OH

Former Korean National champion and trainer of 5 world champions, Master Joo Yul Oh
arrived in Brazil in 1977, first in Sao Paulo (for 2 years) and then to Recife (capital of
Pernambuco in the north of Brazil) where he settled for the next 9 years teaching TKD.
In the mid 80s Master Oh became the trainer of Brazil's national team and was responsible
for an immense improvement in the technical level culminating with a greater performance
in international competitions. Master Oh was a publisher of a magazine call "Sports TKD"
in the 80s and also was the first in Brazil to manufacture TKD equipment and protection
for sparing. He's now 8th DAN and lives in the US where he owns a school in Florida.

RODNEY
AMERICO REIS

Master Rodney Reis was a student of Woo Jae Lee in Rio de Janeiro and became the first
Brazilian TKD star in the 70s. He won 3 times the heavy weight national title and contributed
a lot with the development of TKD in Brazil, in those ground-breaking years. He ran a
successful TKD school in Rio for more than 2 decades. He was the most traditional Master,
refusing to incorporate the new techniques and changes made by the WTF in the following
years. Master Reis retired from TKD teaching in the late 90s. In 2008 the Rio de Janeiro
TKD Federation created a competition that carrys his name in recognition for his work.

FLAVIO MOLINA Flavio Molina was a student of Woo Jae Lee in Rio and a 3 times middle weight national
champion. In the late 70s he became the most famous Brazilian TKD fighter to come out
of that era; he competed in the 1982 World Championships in Ecuador, but did not medal.
Besides TKD, he was a model for TV commercials and is the "Father of Thai Boxing in
Rio de Janeiro". Molina's life took a tragic direction: first he end up participating in a
famous Mixed Martial Arts match against a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighter and because he was
not familiar with grappling, he lost. After that he retired and became a special operations
police officer specializing in aerial rescue. Molina saved the lives of many people, including
high profile politicians. He died in the 90s in a terrible accident, falling from a helicopter
during an exhibition for a TV show. He is a TKD hero in Brazil!

CARLOS LODDO

Master Carlos Loddo was the "King of Brazilian TKD in the 80s". He had a huge impact in
the Brazilian TKD during that period, a 6 times national champion, 2 times Brazilian Cup
Champion, and the first Brazilian to win a medal in international competition at the World
Cup in Colorado (1986). Master Loddo was creative and ahead of his time; the first
Brazilian TKD fighter to hire a professional trainer to assist with his preparation, he modern-
ized Brazilian training by replacing the traditional way of fighting with the new modern
techniques from the WTF and the results of Loddo's advances were dramatic. As a trainer
and coach, he was responsible for at least 60 national titles and many were his own students.
He was the founder of the FETAD (in Brazilia) Brazil's capital, city where he lived.
He learned TKD from Korean Master Soo Myung Choi.  Master Loddo refused to move
up in rank staying at 1st DAN. He retired in early 90s to become a Philosophy teacher in a
Canadian University. Recently he moved back to Brazil.

..in 1986 Natl. Champs.

ANDRE ALEX
LIMA

Master Andre Lima is the most recognized TKD man to come out of South America. He
was a student of Masters Soo Myung Choi and Carlos Loddo and didn't compete much
inside Brazil. Lima first burst into Brazil's scene in the mid 80s, doing some astonishing
TKD demonstrations shows in prime time National TV. He jumped off of the third floor of
a building; then jumped over a car to break a board and finished the demo smashing a pile
of 20 tiles with his head.  He is  recognized in Brazil as the pioneer of TKD in Ceara State
which is located in northern Brazil. In the late 80s, he moved to Europe where he competed
widely wining several titles including the Opens of France, Belgium, Germany and etc. He
also competed in the US where he settled with his wife, Christianny Paiva Lima 5th DAN,
and daughter Aycka Lima 2nd DAN. They own the Lima Taekwondo Academy in
California. Master Lima is now a 6th DAN and well-know in the TKD community for
hundreds of appearances in martial arts magazines in the 80s and 90s, a book called
"Combat Kicking", and also for his work in movies; in 2007 he was the lead in the
movie "Beyond the Ring".
